We weren’t entirely sure what to expect from Puerto Rico—but it turned out to be one of the most vibrant, diverse, and photogenic destinations we’ve explored. From historic Old San Juan and palm-fringed beaches to glowing bioluminescent bays and lush rainforest trails, Puerto Rico really does have it all.
If you're planning your first trip to this U.S. territory, this guide is packed with real experiences, practical tips, and all the highlights from our five-day itinerary—designed to give you the best of culture, coast, and Caribbean rhythm.
Why visit Puerto Rico?
A mix of history and tropical escape – Explore colorful colonial towns in the morning and pristine beaches by the afternoon.
Incredible local food & cocktails – Mofongo, fresh seafood, piña coladas—come hungry.
Natural wonders galore – From glowing bays to rainforest trails, Puerto Rico is a nature-lover's dream.
It’s made for spontaneity – Compact and well-connected, you can go from city to beach to jungle in the same day.
Gateway to the islands - Not only do you have the Spanish Virgin Islands (Culebra and Vieques) at your fingertips, but many other Caribbean islands, including Dominican Republic, British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands, are a short flight away
Day 1: Old San Juan – Colorful Streets & Caribbean Flair
After checking in to our hotel, we jumped straight into exploring Old San Juan, one of the most beautiful and walkable colonial towns in the Caribbean.
What to See & Do
Free Walking Tour at 10am – We started our day with a guided walk from Plaza Colón (just a 10-minute taxi ride from most hotels). It was the perfect intro to the city’s rich history and stunning Spanish architecture.
Brunch in the Old Town – There are loads of cozy cafés tucked into brightly colored buildings—perfect for coffee, eggs, and people-watching.
Don’t Miss:
El Morro Fort – Iconic views, sea breeze, and lots of open space for kids to roam
Fortaleza Street – The famous umbrella street
Street Art & Colorful Alleys – Get your camera ready; every corner is so photogenic!
Day 2: Salsa, Beach Time & a Taste of Local Life
We took it slow in the morning —so it was the perfect chance to wander into new neighborhoods.
What to See & Do
Explore Isla Verde – One of the best beaches on the island, with soft sand, swaying palms, and calm waters. Ideal for a relaxed morning.
Catch a football match – For sports fans, we found a great local spot to watch premier league football with cold drinks and a lively crowd.
Evening Plans
Salsa Class at 7pm – We booked a beginner class and it was SO much fun. Whether you’ve danced before or not, it’s a great way to dive into Puerto Rican culture (and laugh at yourself a bit).
Dinner at Comedor (8:30pm) – Stylish and intimate with standout local flavors. Go for the octopus or anything with plantains.
Day 3: Beach Hopping + Bioluminiscent Magic
We picked up our rental car and headed east for a full beach-and-nature day—one of the most memorable parts of our trip.
What to See & Do
Luquillo Beach – Great for families with food kiosks, calm waves, and shady spots
Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve – Three pristine beaches here:
Playa Colora – Wild and beautiful
Playa Escondido – Quiet and peaceful
Seven Seas Beach – Calm waters, great for swimming
Evening Plans
Bioluminescent Bay in Fajardo – We booked a 6:30pm tour (arrived by 6pm) and it was pure magic. Paddling through glowing waters as tiny plankton lit up around us felt like something out of a dream! I personally expected the colours to be a bit brighter than they were, but perhaps it wasn't the best night to see them. But it was such a fun experience!
Day 4 and 5: El Yunque or the Spanish Virgin Islands?
All the blogs I read to prepare for out trip raved about El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico’s famous rainforest. So naturally, we carved out a full day to explore it. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t quite live up to the hype.
Here’s why: entry is limited to just 200 cars a day, and unless you’re one of the early arrivals, you’re stuck waiting in a one-in, one-out system at the gate. It took ages, and by the time we got in, much of the day had slipped away. The few accessible trails felt crowded and the vibe was more “logistical challenge” than “lush escape.” Beautiful in theory, but for us, it ended up being more stress than serenity.
If you’re short on time, or simply want a more rewarding adventure, we’d recommend skipping El Yunque and instead taking a trip to one of the Spanish Virgin Islands: Culebra or Vieques. Both can be reached by ferry from Fajardo or Ceiba, and they offer the kind of postcard-perfect Caribbean experience that travelers dream of.

Culebra: Laid-Back Paradise
Culebra is tiny, tranquil, and famous for Flamenco Beach, often ranked among the world’s most beautiful. Powdery white sand, turquoise water, and a relaxed, no-fuss vibe—it’s the kind of place where time slows down. There’s excellent snorkeling right off the beach (try Carlos Rosario or Tamarindo), and the island’s small size makes it easy to explore in a single day. Perfect if you’re after a chill beach escape with minimal crowds.
Why go: For soft sands, calm waters, and a peaceful, off-the-grid beach day.
Vibe: Simple, rustic, and postcard-worthy.
Vieques: Wild & Romantic
Vieques is the slightly larger, more rugged sister island—known for its bioluminescent bay and wild, untouched beaches. You’ll find hidden coves, roaming horses, and a more adventurous feel overall. It’s ideal if you want to blend relaxation with exploration and don’t mind staying overnight. Mosquito Bay here is one of the brightest bio bays in the world, and kayaking through it after dark is nothing short of magical.
Why go: For adventure, raw natural beauty, and that unforgettable glow of the bio bay
Vibe: Adventurous, romantic, and untamed.

Where to stay in Puerto Rico
Whether you're planning to split your time between San Juan and the beaches of Luquillo—or just looking for a stylish base to explore from—here are two hotel options we loved:
Don Rafa Boutique Hotel (San Juan) – A beautifully restored historic property in the heart of the city. Think: elegant design, warm hospitality, and walking distance to Old San Juan’s highlights. Perfect for couples or families wanting charm without sacrificing location.
Fairfield by Marriott Luquillo – Modern, convenient, and just minutes from Luquillo Beach. A great pick if you’re planning to explore the northeast coast or spend time in El Yunque. Bonus: free parking and breakfast included.
Final thoughts: Why Puerto Rico belongs on your radar
From salsa rhythms and sizzling seafood to glowing bays and rainforest trails, Puerto Rico is the kind of place that hits all the right notes—whether you're in search of culture, nature, relaxation, or adventure.
If you're looking for a destination that’s easy to reach, packed with variety, and still feels like somewhat of a hidden gem, Puerto Rico is it.
