TRAVEL PROPAGANDA WE’RE NOT FALLING FOR

“Wake up at 5am to have the place to yourself!”
No thanks—I’m on holiday, not joining the military.

“It’s totally a hidden gem!”
There’s hidden gems, and there’s underrated destinations. If it’s on 20 viral reels, it’s not hidden. And just because you haven’t heard of it, doesn’t mean it’s hidden!

“You have to be a digital nomad to really experience travel.”
Nope. You can love travel and love coming home. You can travel around a 9-5. Balance isn’t boring!

“Every trip needs a jam-packed itinerary!”
Ok I’m guilty of this one in the past, but I’m changing!! Sometimes I just want to nap, wander, and find snacks.

“Live like a local!”
Except locals aren’t paying €300 a night for an ‘authentic’ stay with a floating breakfast…

MINI GUIDE TO VILNIUS, LITHUANIA 🇱🇹

If you’re planning a trip to the Baltics, Vilnius is the capital you don’t want to overlook. We certainly didn’t expect to like it as much as we did, so here’s your go-to list for what to see, do, eat, and where to stay in Vilnius:

THINGS TO SEE & DO

✨Vilnius Old Town – One of the largest and most elegantly preserved old towns in Europe. We found it to be the most graceful and atmospheric of the Baltic capitals.
✨Gediminas Tower – Climb this hilltop fortress for panoramic views across the Old Town’s sea of terracotta rooftops
✨The Republic of Užupis – A self-declared bohemian republic with its own flag, president, and tongue-in-cheek constitution. It’s arty, a bit weird, and totally wonderful.
✨St. Anne’s Church – A red brick Gothic beauty (see my last post!)
✨Vilnius Cathedral & Bell Tower – The neoclassical heart of the city
✨MO Museum – A striking modern art space and a contrast to the city’s historic charm.
✨Literatu Street – A hidden alley filled with tributes to writers connected to Lithuania
✨Lukiskiu Prison 2.0. This is a repurposed former prison (closed only in 2019!). We missed it this time but it comes highly recommended!

WHERE TO EAT
✨Džiaugsmas - A modern twist on Baltic ingredients, and one of the most acclaimed restaurants in Vilnius.
✨Uzupio picerija - you can’t miss it, the most popular pizzeria in Užupis
✨Georgian House - we had Georgian food twice during our time in the Baltics; this place is cozy and the wine is divine!
If you like cocktails,
✨Alchemikas - we dropped by for an aperitivo before our dinner in Džiaugsmas and the cocktails were delicious (and affordable!)
✨Nick & Nora - very authentic cocktails with some more traditional Lithuanian tastes

STAY
We stayed at the absolutely stunning @hotelpacai—a luxiouriously restored 17th-century palace.

PRO TIPS
✨Take the free Old Town walking tour (leaves daily from Cathedral Square) — it helps you make sense of the architecture and quirks of the city
✨Dont miss Stikliu street, one of the most beautiful streets in Vilnius Old Town
✨If you have a bit more time, Trakai Castle and the city of Kaunas are both worth visiting!

TRAKAI CASTLE, LITHUANIA

Ok I butchered that pronunciation I think - don’t come at me! 🙈

Just 30 minutes from Vilnius, Trakai Castle is a great halfday trip from the capital — and it’s easy to see why.

Set on a tiny island in Lake Galvė, this 14th-century fortress offers a mix of history, nature, and incredible views. You can walk across the wooden bridge, explore the castle museum, or just take in the peaceful lake surroundings.

Perfect in both summer and winter, Trakai is a must-visit whether you’re into medieval history or just want to escape the city for a few hours.

PRO TIP: And if you made it all the way to the end of the video you’d have seen clips of some dumplings! Lithuanian dumpling, or Cepelinai, is really popular here, and is a great snack for by the water.

ST ANNE’S CHURCH, VILNIUS

Did you know that Vilnius Old Town is home to over 40 churches? One of the most iconic is the breathtaking St. Anne’s Church, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Europe, built from 33 types of red brick.

With its intricate façade and towering arches, it’s no surprise that Napoleon famously wished to take it back to Paris — and visitors often compare it to Notre Dame for its striking beauty and architectural detail.

If you’re looking for things to do in Vilnius, this spot is an absolute must-see. And don’t forget to explore the Bernardine Church and Monastery next door — equally rich in history and charm.

✨You’re in the heart of Vilnius Old Town
Step outside and you’re surrounded by history, cobbled streets, and local spots we actually loved. The location is unbeatable if you want to explore Vilnius on foot (which is the best way to do so)

✨A peaceful, quiet vibe — even in the city
Mornings on the courtyard terrace, slow evening aperitives by the outdoor fireplace… it’s the kind of hotel that makes you want to stay in just a little. The hotel front desk told us it was popular for staycation bookings, and we can totally see why.

✨Breakfast is actually worth waking up for
A la carte eggs, fresh pastries, and champagne alongside a generous buffet. Although we didnt manage to have dinner at the hotel, the restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide 👌

✨Service that’s warm and intuitive
From the warm welcome at check-in to remembering our coffee order each morning, the staff struck that rare balance of being personal without being overbearing. Hospitality can feel a bit cold in parts of Western Europe — but not here.

This cozy little capital city stole my heart. It was the biggest surprise of all the destinations on our Baltic trip. I didn’t expect to find so much charm packed into such a quiet, unassuming city.

Understated luxury at its finest!

THE HILL OF CROSSES, LITHUANIA 🇱🇹

The Hill of Crosses is exactly what it sounds like: a small hill covered in over 100,000 crosses, crucifixes, statues of the Virgin Mary, and rosaries, left by visitors and pilgrims from all over the world.

The exact origins are unclear, but crosses began appearing in the 1800s, particularly after uprisings against Russian rule. Families of the fallen rebels who couldn’t find their bodies would place crosses on the hill in remembrance.

During Soviet occupation, the site became a symbol of peaceful resistance. The Soviets bulldozed the hill multiple times (as many as three or four), but locals kept rebuilding it—often under cover of night.

After Lithuania regained independence, the hill became an official pilgrimage site, and even Pope John Paul II visited, declaring it a place of hope, peace, and sacrifice.
